The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) does not support the Rwandan government’s decision to accept immigrants from the United Kingdom.
The party made the announcement after it was reported in various media outlets that Rwanda had agreed to host the migrants and that the agreement had now been signed in Kigali between the two countries.
The Green Party argues that the reason it does not support the policy is that Rwanda is a small country; it has a small area and a small natural resource compared to its population.
The party, however, does not prevent refugees from choosing to flee to Rwanda as they have chosen but not from the UK and other European countries.
So it is not right for rich countries, including the United Kingdom, to put pressure on developing countries to accept refugees because those rich countries have the money to implement them voluntarily.
Rwanda is one of the most populous countries in Africa, with a population of over 13 million on an area of 26,338 (km²), which means that it has a population of 459 per square kilometer.
Rwanda has already signed up to host them
The Rwandan government has signed a five-year agreement with the United Kingdom to accommodate the influx of migrants to the UK.
Immigrants who arrive in Rwanda will be able to apply for residency in Rwanda if they wish, or be assisted to return to their home countries, and those who wish to do so will be offered employment after attending various courses.
At the same time, the United Kingdom will help Rwanda fully invest in the services it will need, such as medical care, employment, legal protection as a full-fledged citizen of Rwanda.
During the trip, the UK promised to invest £120 million (more than 120 Frw) in various opportunities for Rwandans and refugees in schools, vocational and vocational courses, language and higher education and universities.
Commenting on the agreement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda, Dr Vincent Biruta, said: if people stay here they can be helped to get jobs through first getting practical skills to make a living in this country, and also to get a place to live, get medical treatment, and so on. ”
