Morocco-Ghana is the first poster of Group C of CAN 2021. Botswanan referee Joshua Bondo will officiate this shock, scheduled for 16h GMT in Yaoundé.
Joshua Bondo to officiate Morocco-Ghana shock
Joshua Bondo will kick off the Morocco-Ghana shock, at the Ahmadou Ahdjo stadium in Yaoundé, this Monday, January 10. He will be assisted by Souru Phatsoane (Lesotho) and James Frederick (Seychelles). Mauritanian Dahan Beida has been appointed as the 4th referee. Tunisian Haythem Guirat will be at VAR with his compatriot Khalil Hassani.
At the height of his 43 years, Joshua Bondo has 20 years of activity for more than 50 games. The Botswanan became a referee after a clash with a referee when he was a footballer. He was playing for Hartepool FC in England at the time. He made his lower leagues debut before officiating matches in the Botswana Premier League. His dream was to officiate at major competitions such as the Africa Cup, the World Cup or the Olympic Games. A dream that came true since he was on the whistle in the Nigeria-Cameroon round of 16 of CAN 2019.
A controversy with Algeria
And this evening he will officiate the shock of Group C Morocco-Ghana. The referee is a regular at big games and a well-known head of the Atlas Lions. The best referee of the CAN U17 of 2007 led Morocco-Guinea on the road to the 2022 World Cup.
Joshua Bando was however at the heart of a controversy after the Algeria-Burkina Faso match (1-1) during qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) had indeed lodged a complaint against the Batswana at CAF. She criticized him for having wronged the Greens by ignoring at least three serious faults.
