The U.S. Department of State will start accepting online applications for the 2024 Diversity Visa lottery on Wednesday, October 5, at noon EDT. Applicants will have until November 8, noon EDT to submit their applications.
For FY 2024, the State Department will make 55,000 green cards available to foreign citizens.
The Diversity Visa program gives foreigners from countries that typically don’t send many immigrants to the United States the chance to receive a green card. The following countries aren’t eligible to apply for 2024: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Natives of Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible.
The State Department recommends applying early in the registration period in case of any website delays due to high demand. Only one submission is allowed per person.
Each year, the Diversity Visa program allows more than 55,000 randomly selected people — only from countries that don’t send many immigrants to the United States — to obtain permanent residency (commonly called a “green card”). It’s a way for individuals and families who otherwise wouldn’t have any way to legally immigrate to the United States to get a green card.
